Xbox Live for the original Xbox ended on 15 April 2010. Insignia brings it back for more than 200 games; Halo 2 on PC has its own route.
What closed
The original Xbox Live service ended on 15 April 2010. Every original Xbox game that relied on it lost online play on that date.
Insignia
Insignia is a free replacement for the original Xbox Live, with no subscription or ads. Its website lists more than 200 supported games. You request a code on the website, then follow its Connection Guide to set up an original Xbox. Games in this directory that Insignia supports:
- Halo 2
- Project Gotham Racing 2
- Burnout 3: Takedown
- Star Wars: Battlefront (2004)
- MechAssault
- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
- Counter-Strike (Xbox)
- Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II
Halo 2 on PC
Halo 2 for Windows Vista used a separate service, Games for Windows Live. Project Cartographer restores its multiplayer; a September 2026 update removed the Games for Windows Live dependency and added a server browser. It needs a legitimately owned copy of the Vista version.
Phantasy Star Online on Xbox
Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II is also supported by Sylverant, a long-running community server that covers several versions of the game. Xbox players link their Gamer Tag on first login.
