After GameSpy: PC multiplayer games that came back
The 2014 GameSpy shutdown took online play away from many PC games. These community services restored it, each for its own games.
What GameSpy did
GameSpy ran master servers, matchmaking and accounts for a large number of PC games. When it shut down in 2014, games that depended on it lost their server lists and online play, even though the games themselves still ran.
Battlefield 2 and 2142
BF2Hub replaces the master server, accounts and ranked statistics for Battlefield 2; you install its client next to your own copy. For Battlefield 2142, BF2142 Reclamation listed active servers in Europe and the United States on 2 November 2026. Its setup guide covers the 1.51 patch, the map pack and an OpenSpy patch.
Crysis
Crytek warned that Crysis multiplayer would stop working when GameSpy switched off. CryMP now runs a public server list and its own launcher for the original PC release.
Command & Conquer
C&C:Online is a free, community-run service for:
- Command & Conquer: Generals and Zero Hour
- Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath
- Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3
Hosting, chat, buddies, statistics and ranking are listed as working. Accounts from the older Revora backend no longer work, so create a new one.
Not GameSpy, but similar: Unreal Tournament 2004
Unreal Tournament 2004 lost its official servers in a different shutdown: Epic Games turned off online services for several older titles on 24 January 2023. 333networks restores its server browser through community master servers.
Before you start
All of these services expect your own copy of the game. Download clients and patches only from the project websites linked on each page.
